Before you get started looking for a used instrument, here are some professional tips on how to spot the quality ones.
Each year, thousands beginning band and orchestra students begin the wonderful pursuit of learning a musical instrument only to be frustrated with a low quality instrument. Unfortunately, there are many used and even new instruments that are of such poor quality that students dont have a chance at succeeding throughout their first year.
Here is a checklist to help you decide whether an instrument is of quality.
Look for instruments of quality brands. For band instruments these brands include:
Artley, Armstrong, Bach, Benge, Blessing, Boosey & Hawkes, Buffet, Bundy, Conn, Emerson, Gem üeinhardt, Getzen, Jupiter, Holton, King, Leblanc, Ludwig, Olds, Pearl, Remo, Selmer, Vito, Yamaha, Yanagisawa and Zildjian. For string instruments, ask a teacher, but always avoid brands sold in or owned by major warehouses.
Try to find out if the instrument has any malnormalities or dents; a major dent can render the instrument practically useless without spending a large sum on repairs if it is in a crucial area, and some problems would cost more to fix than you paid for the instrument.
Have the instrument inspected by an instrument repair technician upon arrival.
